Arriva Heritage Fleet open-topper firm favourite at this year’s Derby
If you want to transport a party of people to a special destination to help them celebrate a great occasion, you could do no better than hiring an Arriva Heritage fleet historic Routemaster. That’s what a group of London advertising executives did for a celebratory visit to this year’s Derby day at Epsom Downs.
The group were collected from a venue in Central London at 9.00 a.m. on Saturday morning, and driven to the course in style in the Heritage Fleet’s RMC 1464, fondly known as the ‘open-topper’.
The advantages of the open-topper on this gloriously sunny day were not only to keep the passengers cool on their drive down, but also to act as an excellent viewing platform for all of the day’s racing, as it was parked up in the enclosure, right alongside the race track.
The clients bought along their own refreshments, and with an on-course bookie right by the bus, had everything to hand including the best possible vantage point to enjoy the day.
This was the second consecutive day that the open-topper had been to Epsom, having been hired previously by another group to take their party to Ladies day.
For the last few years, as well as being used at Ladies day and the Derby, RMC 1464 has featured in the Lord Mayor's Show to celebrate the commitment of Arriva's staff in their charitable giving through Payroll Giving. In this year's show, we will again be displaying the Platinum Award for their efforts, and targeting a further Platinum award for the year ahead.
As the photographs demonstrate, the Derby day travellers on the open-topper had a fantastic day, and were abundant in their praise for their transport and the exciting day out. As Emily, one of the party, said:-
"Such a lovely way to arrive at Epsom Downs, on such a lovely vintage bus, with a fantastic view from the top of the bus right across the downs to the City of London. And what a great vantage point to watch the racing. Fun, sun, friends and a great time, what more can you ask for? I can’t wait for next year!"

Arriva London supports local communities in many ways, so when asked to be involved in this project for yet another year, the decision was an easy one.
Operating from 17 sites with over 5,000 bus drivers, this new position will play a key role in leading and directing the increased focus on operational performance, along with the delivery of the Arriva London business plan.
Vintage bus parade at Victoria Bus Station to mark the 70th anniversary of the first post-war RT bus features an Arriva route
To mark the 70th anniversary of the first post-war RT bus, there was a parade of vintage buses at Victoria Bus Station on Wednesday morning.
The visit had been organised following Leon meeting Enfield bus driver Malkiat Birdi, whilst he was attending the TfL initiative for drivers called Hello London.
Making the capital’s buses as simple to use as the London Underground is a new initiative being trialled on seven London bus routes, including Arriva London routes 150 and 128.
In association with TfL and HCT Transport, we opened our doors to welcome the public, giving them the opportunity to explore the garage, meet our operations teams, ride on a bus through the bus wash, tour our operations control centres and see & ride on some historic preserved buses.
