Arriva London bus driver of the year 2010

Bus Driver of the Year 2009 EntrantsBus Driver of the Year 2009 EntrantsArriva London’s search for its bus driver of the year for 2010 is well under way. With over 65 applicants the training team are busy sorting through the list of drivers that hope to be at the finals on June 12 at Beddington Farm garage.

Judging road craftJudging road craftOnce all the applications have been screened for eligibility the remaining entrants will have mystery traveller style observations carried out by plain clothed driving instructors travelling on the bus to assess their performance. They are checked for their driving skills and levels of customer service. Each candidate will receive a score depending on their performance and the top 30 will progress to the final.

There’s a great deal at stake, as well as competing to be crowned Arriva London bus driver of the year, the top six (three from north London and three from south London) receive a cash prize with the winner also earning themselves a weekend break for two.

Manoevering skillsManoevering skillsThe final is composed of three disciplines, the first is a driving skills test including tricky manoeuvres around traffic cones both forwards and reverse; then it’s another service drive on the local roads surrounding the garage. Measuring kerb distanceMeasuring kerb distanceThis will take in bus positioning road craft and stopping position at bus stops. Finally it’s into the classroom for the Highway Code and vehicle safety test.

Only then will they proudly take their place as Arriva London’s top driver and along with the three runners up represent Arriva London at the national bus driver of the year final in Blackpool on September 5.
