Ringing the changes at Henlys Corner

Arriva London has been in talks with Transport for London and Barnet Council for two years in a bid to address the amount of time lost at the intersection of the A406 North Circular Road and A598 Finchley Road/Regents Park Road.

Now, something is being done to upgrade right turns for drivers and the new layout (known as a hamburger roundabout) will allow cars to queue safely in the centre of the junction.
Signalled crossings for pedestrians will also be introduced.
Multi-million-pound construction work on the carriageway started in April and is expected to last until the end of 2011.

As well as renewed signage and lighting, the road will be repaired and resurfaced and landscape improvements will also be made.
Mark Hill is performance manager for Route 102, which goes from Brent Cross to Edmonton Green via Henlys Corner.

He said: “Henlys Corner has always been an issue for us in terms of traffic congestion. In the summer of 2009 we carried out a number of traffic counts and videoed the queues and then presented our findings to TfL and Barnet Council. Our discussions have been on-going so now we’re pleased that progress is being made. I’m sure our passengers and the local residents will appreciate the changes. It’s a busy and dangerous junction – particularly for pedestrians – and we have been informed that the new layout will improve traffic flow and allow 12 vehicles to be able to turn right from Finchley Road onto the eastbound A406 per green light phase, rather than the current three.”
