Arriva London employee races Dragon boats for charity
For the past few years, Nadeem Fazal, the acting garage supervisor from Arriva London’s Clapton garage, has been collecting money for his favourite charity, the ‘Arthritis Self Help Network’, a small charity based in Ilford Essex.
Each year, his endeavours for the charity have grown and for this year he has managed, through his activities and the generosity of his colleagues, to raise more than £500. To recognise his achievements, Arriva London has added a further £100 to the sum.
As well as asking his workmates to contribute, Nadeem has an exciting and exhilarating way of raising funds by being part of the Dragon boat racing team from the charity called “the Bees Knees”.
He and his son have been part of the team for the last couple of years, and have enjoyed every minute of the racing, including being the champions in last year’s race. This year they didn’t finish first, but they still managed to raise the vital funds needed to help the charity move to improved premises.
Diane Wynne–Fitzgerald, President of the Arthritis Self Help Network, said:-
“Our charity participates in the Dragon Boat Festival at Fairlop Waters every year. Nadeem and his son have supported us regularly in this fund raising event by paddling with our “Bees Knees” crew. We are a very small charity run by patient volunteers, and the £501 collected by Nadeem from Arriva London’s Mare Street garage and boosted by the additional £100 will enable us to continue our projects at the new headquarters we shall be sharing with two other charities; so very many thanks for the generous donations”.
Arriva London is continually supportive of its employees’ charitable fund raising efforts, and currently holds the Gold Award for its 2015 Payroll Giving campaign.

Last summer, we were delighted to be awarded the contract from TfL to operate route W4 running from Oakthorpe Park Estate to Tottenham Ferry Lane estate, operating from Wood Green garage.
As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
Doing the right thing, one of our four brand values, is what we have been doing for the last six years by encouraging all of our employees to give to their favourite charities through our Payroll Giving scheme - during this time, they have given more than £1,000,000 pounds to over 160 charities.
