Arriva London’s Tottenham garage welcomes TfL graduate trainees
Arriva London believes that training is the key to success and is always willing to help other organisations, particularly in the transport industry, to help train their staff. A recent request from TfL to show two groups of graduate trainees the rudiments of running a bus garage was no exception, and Arriva London’s Tottenham garage was chosen to host the visitors.
The Tottenham garage has all of the facilities needed to run modern bus routes, with the operations management to support the drivers, the engineering facilities to service and maintain the vehicles, and its own iBus Control Centre to regulate bus services, it is ideally suited to demonstrate the role.
The graduates were shown around the garage by operations manager Gary Smith, giving them an insight into how the garage runs, how the training is carried out, and how it fits into TfL as a whole.
First they visited the ‘Output’ the centre of communications for all of the drivers, where each driver signs in for their duty and receives details of their designated bus.
They then saw the Engineering pit areas, illustrating the engineering function, then onto the inside of the bus, demonstrating the safety checks drivers have to make on and around the bus before going into service.
Finally they visited the iBus control centre, the heartbeat of the routes, where controllers can see exactly where each vehicle is on the route, and be in touch to guide the driver safely and efficiently through the journey.
The graduates said they found it fascinating and had no idea how complex the operation was until seeing it for themselves.

When Arriva London started their Payroll Giving promotional program in 2014, encouraging more staff to get involved with giving to charity through the Payroll Giving scheme, they didn’t realise how welcoming the staff would be to the idea, and how generous the Payroll Givers would be.
The Arriva London Heritage Fleet is the company’s way of maintaining a moving history of London.
