Arriva London staff win prestigious M.A.D awards
The M.A.D (Making a Difference) awards are an annual national event in Arriva’s calendar. The idea is to recognise members of staff that are passionate in what they do, and regularly go the extra mile to provide the best possible customer experience, whether an engineer, a member of the support staff or a driver.
This year five of Arriva London’s staff were short listed, which is a great achievement in itself, and of these three won awards. The awards are for various categories of M.A.D. such as Business performance, Giving, Unsung heroes and Continually.
The outright winner for the ‘Continually’ M.A.D category, was Patience Okezie. The award is for an individual who continually makes an outstanding effort in his or her role.
Patience, the senior garage supervisor from Arriva London’s Brixton garage, has worked for the company for twenty-two years, and was recognised for always doing that extra bit for colleagues and customers, no matter what time of day or night. Her reaction was:-
“I was very surprised. You don’t think you are being thought of as you are just doing your job. I love working here, I love the people I work for. I’m a believer in what you do, you do very well. In that sense I do more and that’s perhaps why I make a difference. This award has lifted my spirit; I feel I belong even more now to Arriva.”
Based at Arriva London’s Ash Grove garage, driver Brian Kerr was Highly Commended in the M.A.D. ‘Giving’ category for his work with the Alzheimer’s Therapy (BAT) foundation, which is pioneering table tennis as a therapy. Brian regularly attends events in the UK hosting games and explaining the therapeutic potential.
The third winner was a ‘Special recognition Award’ to James Rossi, a driver from Arriva London’s Watford garage, who had saved the life of a young man suffering from an allergy shock on his bus.
James was alarmed when the 17-year-old boarded the 268 bus in Hampstead High Street, and although there were other passengers on the bus, saw that the schoolboy needed urgent help as his face was very red and swollen. He drove straight from Hampstead High Street to just where the boy requested him to stop for specialist medication, completing the journey in half the expected time. Weeks later, he was contacted by the boy’s mother and told that without his quick-thinking, the teenager would have died.

Last June, Arriva London was delighted to have been re-awarded the TfL contract to run route W6 (Edmonton Green – Southgate Station) for a further five years, starting in January 2018 with brand new buses.
As the festive season approaches, we all look forward to the good-will of giving and receiving, and this was truly illustrated last week when members of our staff made a tour of London, on our open top bus, to meet representatives of some of their charities they give to through their Payroll Giving and celebrate #GivingTuesday.
Arriva London scooped three awards at the National Payroll Giving Excellence Awards held in November.
Arriva London collected three prestigious awards at the UK Bus Awards held at the historic Troxy cinema venue in Limehouse, East London.
This year’s Lord Mayor’s Show, on 11th November, was an amazing cause for celebration, not only to welcome in the new Lord Mayor, but also to celebrate another year of Platinum giving by our wonderfully generous Payroll Givers.
Route 175 operates with 16 double-deck vehicles from our Barking garage, with a twelve-minute frequency during the day. Route 103 operates from our Grays garage with 14 buses, with an eight-minute daytime frequency.
