Arriva London’s Brixton garage holds Travel training day
In line with other Arriva London garages across London who hold travel training days for people with disabilities, Brixton garage in South London held its first Travel training day last week.
In partnership with Lambeth Council, the garage hosted pupils from St. Gabriel’s college in Camberwell. The garage provided a New Routemaster bus together with staff from the customer service department. Together they assisted personnel from the Metropolitan police, TfL and Lambeth Council in demonstrating a variety of unsafe scenarios. This gave the pupils an understanding of some of the dangers that they may encounter when travelling by bus, and how they can attempt to deal with these challenges.
The initial emphasis was on road safety and how to approach busy streets full of traffic. They were also shown how to cross roads and how to use the bus. The team then led a discussion on travelling on the London bus network and gave the group advice on how to travel safely when encountering certain situations. The students were then introduced to the techniques of ‘stranger danger’ disengagement by encouraging them to move away, look out of the window, and not to disclose any personal information.
Arriva London now supports travel training days on a monthly basis in Enfield, Croydon and Lambeth, and hopes these will continue to be regular events.

Last summer, we were delighted to be awarded the contract from TfL to operate route W4 running from Oakthorpe Park Estate to Tottenham Ferry Lane estate, operating from Wood Green garage.
As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
