Arriva London supports TfL Youth Travel Ambassadors project
Arriva London is always looking to assist the communities it serves, by providing support for educational training of all age groups in how to best use TfL’s transport systems, and this week was no exception.
A recent request from Michael Kitchen, co-ordinator for TfL's Youth Travel Ambassadors (YTA) programme, to create training videos to demonstrate unsociable behaviour by young people on buses, and how to deal with it, is just such a project which Arriva London was very happy to help with.
YTA is a London-wide programme delivered in partnership with borough councils and TfL to increase active travel, improve behaviour and increase safety for the 11-18 age group.
Arriva London's role was to lend the project a double-decker bus for the day with Helen, an Arriva London driver, to ferry the groups to various locations and be filmed doing her job.
Two Enfield schools, St Anne’s Catholic High school for girls and Chace Community school, won the opportunity from TfL to make films to raise awareness of anti-social behaviour and safety issues concerning bus travel. The finished films will be shown in Assemblies, Citizenship Workshops and on the TfL YouTube channel. Chace Community school undertook their filming on the Arriva London bus in the morning and St Anne's had the afternoon to complete theirs.
Mia, a student at St Anne's, explained how they were involved in the project:-
"At YTA we're doing a film for TfL on anti-social behaviour on buses. We have created six scenes showing different anti-social behaviours by school children, such as seat hugging, mean kids and travelling short distances on the bus when it would be quicker to walk. The idea is to make the films to demonstrate the problems and then to show the solutions. It's really exciting to do. We got chosen to do it by presenting our ideas to a group of TfL 'dragons', who then chose the best ideas presented by different schools and offered the funding."
At the end of the shooting Michael Kitchen said:-
"Today's been really good. we've had two schools working on the project who both prepared really well, and St Anne's surprised us with some quite amusing scenes. I think sometimes it's important to have a touch of humour with a serious subject to help the message get across.
Arriva London have been very accommodating, giving us a double-decker bus and a fantastic driver for the day, which really brings value to the project and lets the students work in a real environment. I am very grateful to Arriva London for their great support".

As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
Doing the right thing, one of our four brand values, is what we have been doing for the last six years by encouraging all of our employees to give to their favourite charities through our Payroll Giving scheme - during this time, they have given more than £1,000,000 pounds to over 160 charities.
Going to school is something we all had to do, but going to school with a red London double-decker bus, and letting four classes from year one come on board to ask questions about the bus, is a privilege we experienced this week at Newbury Park Primary School in North East London.
Last June, Arriva London was delighted to have been re-awarded the TfL contract to run route W6 (Edmonton Green – Southgate Station) for a further five years, starting in January 2018 with brand new buses.
As the festive season approaches, we all look forward to the good-will of giving and receiving, and this was truly illustrated last week when members of our staff made a tour of London, on our open top bus, to meet representatives of some of their charities they give to through their Payroll Giving and celebrate #GivingTuesday.
