Arriva European Community Action Awards 2016
Arriva London is part of the Arriva Group, which operates bus and train services in 14 European countries. Each year a committee drawn from the group invites all employees across Europe to enter the Arriva Community Action Awards programme, to demonstrate their charitable contribution to their communities in their spare time and, in recognition of these achievements, to present them with a gift for both themselves and their charities.
There was a multitude of applications this year and the quality of entries was very high. The selection process for the judges was very difficult, but three Arriva London employees were successful.
The three were:
- Tim Hatari, an operating manager at Brixton garage
- Fidelis Idowu, a bus driver also from Brixton garage
- Brian Kerr, a bus driver from Ash Grove garage
Tim’s charity is Loveworks, which is a small charity based in Reigate (Surrey) which does a tremendous amount of work in the local community. The primary activities of the charity involve: supporting individuals and families that have temporarily fallen on hard times with regular food bank supplies, supporting and organising events for the elderly that are lonely, vulnerable or unable to get out and supporting a women’s refuge of vulnerable young ladies and women fleeing domestic violence.
Tim said:- “I became involved with the charity in October 2012 when writing a university paper on volunteering, and was fascinated by the generosity of others. This led me to speak with the founder and other volunteers, which is how I really learnt about what they do and the founders’ motto – “It’s not what you give, but how you give what you give that counts”. This phrase has really stuck with me and from there I began helping with a regular food bank and recently participated in the London Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise money for them”.
Fidelis supports the charity Sense for deafblind people. This is a national charity that supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind or have sensory impairments. Fidelis has run a number of marathons to raise funds for the charity and was recognised for his dedication to them.
Brian’s charity is a fairly new one, The Bounce Alzheimer's Therapy (BAT) Foundation - a young 'Health & Wellbeing' Charity that is pioneering 'Table Tennis Therapy for Alzheimer's'. Table Tennis has already been proven, in extensive studies carried out in the U.S. and Japan, to be incredibly effective in delaying the symptoms in early onset Alzheimer's and has been designated the 'World's No. 1 Brain Sport'. Brian appears in the video clip below.
Helping Brian to achieve his award was this comment from the charity:- “Brian Kerr has been with the charity since its registration in November 2014 and has worked tirelessly above and beyond the call of duty, for us, ever since. He is now an Ambassador for the BAT Table Tennis Therapy Table and regularly attends various events in the U.K. hosting play and explaining the therapeutic potential.”
Presenting cheques to each of the award winners was Arriva London’s Managing Director, Bob Scowen, who had this to say:- “I’m always delighted to hear such great stories about the staff who work for Arriva London and their generosity and kindness to their charities. It also gives me great pleasure to be able to present cheques from Arriva to these worthwhile causes”.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Michelle Salter and Donna Prendergast from the Sickle Cell Society to our Brixton garage, to meet with some of the givers and also record a few words about what the Payroll Givers' generosity means to their charity.
We have the ambition to become the mobility partner of choice, preferred by our passengers, partners and clients. Having a diverse, talented and motivated workforce is key to achieving that ambition.
We are always looking at ways to improve our green credentials and a recent initiative, part of our Destination Green programme across the business, at our North London Palmers Green garage is another illustration of this process.
Last summer, we were delighted to be awarded the contract from TfL to operate route W4 running from Oakthorpe Park Estate to Tottenham Ferry Lane estate, operating from Wood Green garage.
As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
