Arriva London features buses from two different eras in the 2016 Lord Mayor’s Show to support Payroll Giving

Despite the pouring rain, the 2016 Lord Mayor’s Show was just as amazing and exciting as all of the others that Arriva London has been involved with over the years. That was due not only to the historical tradition that the whole ceremony invokes, but particularly to the enthusiasm and humour that the participating Arriva London staff brought to the show.

For the past few years, Arriva London’s presence has been represented by the company’s Heritage Fleet open-top Routemaster RMC 1464, surrounded by proud staff marching in the parade, all of whom are Payroll Givers. But this year, in view of the company winning the Charity Aids Foundation Platinum Award, Arriva London painted a current hybrid double-decker bus (HV 64) platinum to celebrate; it seemed the right thing to do to have this bus in the parade as well.

Every Arriva London Payroll Giving participant had been invited to take part, having had their names drawn from the 1,000 Payroll Givers register. From the feedback, each of the participants said they enjoyed a fantastic day out, and were proud to have been a part of a day they will never forget.

Since 1215, every newly-elected Lord Mayor has been required to travel through the winding mediaeval streets of the City of London to Westminster, to swear loyalty to the Crown. Over the centuries, this journey has become a much loved fixture in the national cultural calendar, with hundreds of thousands of people lining the streets and millions more watching the 6,500-strong procession on TV. This is the Lord Mayor’s Show.

This year’s pageant included 180 horses, 164 vehicles (including the two Arriva London buses), jazz bands, steam engines, fire engines, a pea harvester, sports cars, tractors, and even a float with Blackpool Tower and another featuring a tank.

The two Arriva London buses had been beautifully prepared by their respective garages: Palmers Green (HV 64) and Norwood (RMC 1464). The open-top RMC 1464 was also adorned with graphic panels in the lower floor windows, illustrating quotes from participants as to which charities they give to and their personal reasons for doing so. Many participants carried paddle sticks with the supported charity names, and both buses sported large helium filled balloons, with the Arriva and PGA logos.

Our next charitable outing with RMC 1464 will be for #Giving Tuesday on 29th November, where we will be visiting various charities in London and bringing together our Payroll Givers with representatives of the charities they support. Watch out for us on the day and come up and say "hi".
