Arriva Heritage Fleet bus says farewell to Dungeness after two month tour of duty
The famous Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, which has a station at Dungeness, has been using Arriva London’s Heritage Fleet RML 2360 Routemaster bus as a temporary ticket office and shop while an extensive refurbishment programme for the permanent ticket office, shop and cafeteria has been undertaken at the station.
The bus started this duty at the beginning of April and has been successfully fulfilling the role until this last May Bank Holiday weekend, when the new facilities were finished and ready for use, and the vintage bus returned to its home base at Norwood in South London.
As the bus has no seats on the lower deck and has been wired with 230 volt mains sockets around the bus, it was ideal for the task, giving the railway staff plenty of room to set up their tills and merchandise for the visitors to buy tickets and memorabilia.
It also helped being a bright red iconic London bus, acting as a beacon to guide visitors to the station in this very open space by the sea.
David, the station master at Dungeness amongst his many duties, was very pleased to have the bus to fill-in while the refurbishment was taking place, he said: -
“It’s been a very interesting experience using the bus as a ticket office and shop. We’re very grateful that we got the use of the bus. We’ve brought back a lot of memories for a lot of people.”
Jade Ashton, the marketing manager for the railway, said: -
“The bus has done a really good job and has been especially popular with children, who have loved watching the trains coming in the distance from the top deck. We will miss seeing her here; thanks again to Arriva London.”

Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
Doing the right thing, one of our four brand values, is what we have been doing for the last six years by encouraging all of our employees to give to their favourite charities through our Payroll Giving scheme - during this time, they have given more than £1,000,000 pounds to over 160 charities.
Going to school is something we all had to do, but going to school with a red London double-decker bus, and letting four classes from year one come on board to ask questions about the bus, is a privilege we experienced this week at Newbury Park Primary School in North East London.
Last June, Arriva London was delighted to have been re-awarded the TfL contract to run route W6 (Edmonton Green – Southgate Station) for a further five years, starting in January 2018 with brand new buses.
As the festive season approaches, we all look forward to the good-will of giving and receiving, and this was truly illustrated last week when members of our staff made a tour of London, on our open top bus, to meet representatives of some of their charities they give to through their Payroll Giving and celebrate #GivingTuesday.
