Arriva London celebrating women in transport
The 2015 celebration of International Women’s Day has prompted Arriva London to talk to some of its female staff, and see how things have changed since their time with the company.
As you all know, last year was the centenary celebration of the beginning of the First World War, and TfL’s celebration of 100 years of women in transport. To continue that theme, there are some memorable facts over the years which have made significant changes to the way women have been employed, and recognised for their contribution to the transport industry, for example:-
- On June 6th 1915 Maida Vale underground station opened on the Bakerloo line and was the first underground station to be staffed entirely by women.
- On the 1st November 1915, Mrs G Dugan became the first women bus conductor in London on Route 37.
- In 1945 Waterloo Bridge was completed, largely built by women.
- In 1972, Yvonne Pope became the first woman to pilot a commercial jet liner.
- 1983 saw Helen Clifford become the first female bus mechanic.
- And in 2013, Shelia Holden was elected the first female president of CIHT (Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation).

We are always looking at ways to improve our green credentials and a recent initiative, part of our Destination Green programme across the business, at our North London Palmers Green garage is another illustration of this process.
Last summer, we were delighted to be awarded the contract from TfL to operate route W4 running from Oakthorpe Park Estate to Tottenham Ferry Lane estate, operating from Wood Green garage.
As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
Doing the right thing, one of our four brand values, is what we have been doing for the last six years by encouraging all of our employees to give to their favourite charities through our Payroll Giving scheme - during this time, they have given more than £1,000,000 pounds to over 160 charities.
