Arriva London drivers volunteer to be interviewed for school video project
At Arriva London, we continually talk with our drivers & often (with their agreement) record their views on video to help us better understand their working environment, and to share with the public how they deal with situations they face every day.
When an outside party asks to do the same, then we naturally take the request seriously and see how best we can accommodate them. Two recent projects that have required our cooperation in this way were the recent “Double Decker Driving School” series of documentaries on ITV 1, and “The Night Bus” on Channel 4.
Wren Academy asked us if Arriva would arrange a 30/40 minute session for their students to interview drivers, recording their responses on video, about their experiences of driving buses, particularly at school times.The latest request, from Wren Academy Youth Travel Ambassadors in North Finchley, working in association with Michael Kitchen TfL’s Youth Travel Ambassador Coordinator, was maybe not so high powered, but we took it just as seriously and successfully accommodated their request.
The project involved 2 adults and 6 students from the Academy, visiting Arriva London’s Wood Green garage to interview the drivers in a meeting room on the first floor.
Mark Gardner, Arriva’s Wood Green operations manager, said:- “The Arriva drivers, who all volunteered to be interviewed, were very happy to be part of the project, and felt that it was a great way of increasing awareness for both parties of how they can better interact in the future”.The interviews are planned to form part of a docu-drama/animation which the students are working on for Citizenship workshops. The objectives are to improve behaviour and safety on and around buses and also to build better relations and understanding between students and drivers.
TfL’s Michael Kitchen, who helped coordinate the project with Arriva, said:-
“Thanks so much for helping out. The students really enjoyed interviewing the drivers who gave some really thoughtful and considered responses – it was a real insight for the students and is great for them to take back to the other students in school.
We would love to bring the completed film back to the garage later in the year to share it with the drivers. It will be forming part of the Citizenship workshop for the whole school to participate in.”

When Arriva London started their Payroll Giving promotional program in 2014, encouraging more staff to get involved with giving to charity through the Payroll Giving scheme, they didn’t realise how welcoming the staff would be to the idea, and how generous the Payroll Givers would be.
