Arriva London driving standards higher

As part of our ongoing drive to improve customer experience, we continually look for ways of enhancing the training we provide for our drivers. The recent introduction to the driver training fleet of three ‘Vigil Vanguard’ on board training systems is a further addition as a real time training tool, allowing drivers and trainers to record their driving skills out on the road.

Four on-board cameras record separate views of the drive, one on either side looking backwards down each side of the vehicle, one camera looking straight ahead in the direction of travel, and the fourth camera showing the driver’s actions throughout the journey.

The system creates a map of the journey via GPS, and allows identification of discussion points on the map during the journey, which can then be reviewed and discussed at a later time away from the bus.

The system has a gyroscopic measurement to record the movement of the bus, and also records the speed, acceleration, braking and fuel usage.

It has already been in use in many countries and industries around the world, and it’s Arriva London’s plan to encourage drivers to take the opportunity of using the Vigil Vanguard to hone and review their driving skills, giving the customer a more consistent and comfortable driving experience going forward.

General Manager Nick Bland said, “We are delighted with the response received from drivers who have undertaken the Vigil Vanguard training. It’s a wonderful training device which I am confident will further improve upon the high levels of professional skills our drivers already possess.”
