Arriva London gears up for more New Routemasters
Arriva London, the first bus company to introduce the New Routemaster for TfL on route 38 in February 2012, has been gearing up for the introduction of New Routemasters (NRMs) on its route 73, running from Stoke Newington to Victoria out of its Stamford Hill garage.
The new buses were initially delivered from Wrightbus in Northern Ireland to Arriva’s North London Edmonton garage, where they were checked and prepared for going into service.
Arriva London now operates the New Routemaster on three of its routes - 38, 73 & route 137 which runs from Streatham Hill to Oxford Circus from Arriva’s Brixton garage, with 35 in service.
A total of 122 NRMs are now in the fleet, with 67 on route 38. There are currently 20 NRMs operating on route 73 with more to be introduced over the summer months bringing the total to 61. They continue to prove very popular with staff and customers alike.
Here are a few comments from some of our drivers:
Oswald Reisinger, a new Brixton driver on the 137, said:-
“I like the bus very much, it’s very good to drive. It’s a big bus so you can fit in a lot of people. Tourists like it very much, it’s a symbol of London and they take a lot of photos of it.”
Shirley, a Clapton driver on the route 38, who before joining Arriva five years ago was a customer service manager, said:-
“I love them, they’re a joy to drive, they’re progressive, they’re the future, I just enjoy driving them and the passengers love them too”
Joseph Duah, who has just started driving the New Routemaster on Route 73 and also likes the design of the bus, says:-
“The front is lovely, because it’s got this airy look to it, which as a driver makes it a lot easier as you can see all around. I’ve been driving the bus and it’s a very smooth bus, it glides off very smoothly, and I’ve also noticed when the passengers come on, there’s a big smile in your face.”
