Arriva London hosts disability awareness discussion in Dartford
Arriva London’s Dartford garage was recently the venue for a continuation of a TfL initiative, inviting disability awareness groups to Arriva London garages, for open discussions about the difficulties of travelling on London buses for people with disabilities.
The group of nine, led by their facilitator John Hersov, who had also taken a group to Arriva London’s Brixton garage earlier in the year, were welcomed to the garage by General Manager Graham Wykes, who introduced them to the garage facilities and some of his staff.
It was decided that the best place to discuss the awareness campaign was actually on a bus in the garage. So everyone boarded a parked up bus and with the help of Arriva driver Lee Foster, the visitors got to air their views and have their questions answered.
The initiative is designed to give TfL and the bus companies feedback on what they are doing right for people with disabilities, and to flag up some of the areas where there could be improvements.
Driver Lee explained to the visitors how it can be difficult for a driver to accommodate a wheelchair user when the allocated space is occupied by a buggy user who is unable to vacate the space, emphasising that he can ask them to move, but cannot insist.
One of the visitors suggested that maybe the overhead grips could be lowered for those who are not quite so tall.
Graham Wykes was very pleased with the outcome and commented:
“It’s always good to hear how customers feel about the service we offer, and particularly those in our community who may need a little extra help with their journeys. It’s also good for our staff to be able to meet customers in this way, and learn more about the services they require; it was a very positive visit”.

We have the ambition to become the mobility partner of choice, preferred by our passengers, partners and clients. Having a diverse, talented and motivated workforce is key to achieving that ambition.
We are always looking at ways to improve our green credentials and a recent initiative, part of our Destination Green programme across the business, at our North London Palmers Green garage is another illustration of this process.
Last summer, we were delighted to be awarded the contract from TfL to operate route W4 running from Oakthorpe Park Estate to Tottenham Ferry Lane estate, operating from Wood Green garage.
As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
