Arriva London’s Rail Replacement bus service an on-going success
Whilst the London Overground service between Gospel Oak and Barking is being electrified and the stations modernised, a replacement bus service is in operation to cover the closure.
Arriva London were delighted to have been awarded the contract to run this service, which started in June and runs to December, with a possible extension until February 2017. They have recently been commended by London Overground, TfL and local user groups for the service they are providing.
The service requires an average of 25 vehicles and 37 drivers, the buses being drawn from Arriva London’s Barking, Brixton and Edmonton garages, with drivers from all of Arriva London garages being assigned to the replacement buses, which run from Walthamstow to Barking and Seven Sisters to Gospel Oak.
Commercial co-ordinator Phil Clark said:
“It is a huge job and we were up against strong competition to secure the contract. We have had support from the whole company and it is testament to the professionalism of our drivers, engineers and hard work of the planning and schedules department that the service is running well with encouraging patronage.”
“The praise from the London Overground and TfL and reports from local passenger user groups saying they are pleased with the service, is also very encouraging. This is the largest rail replacement contract we have been part of, and are delighted with the reception it has received.”

Vintage bus parade at Victoria Bus Station to mark the 70th anniversary of the first post-war RT bus features an Arriva route
To mark the 70th anniversary of the first post-war RT bus, there was a parade of vintage buses at Victoria Bus Station on Wednesday morning.
The visit had been organised following Leon meeting Enfield bus driver Malkiat Birdi, whilst he was attending the TfL initiative for drivers called Hello London.
Making the capital’s buses as simple to use as the London Underground is a new initiative being trialled on seven London bus routes, including Arriva London routes 150 and 128.
In association with TfL and HCT Transport, we opened our doors to welcome the public, giving them the opportunity to explore the garage, meet our operations teams, ride on a bus through the bus wash, tour our operations control centres and see & ride on some historic preserved buses.
Our recent route gains in North London include route 19, from Finsbury Park to Battersea Bridge (South Side), which has meant implementing an extensive mobilisation programme to maintain our high standards.
One of the most important elements in Arriva London’s development is the training and education it offers its staff, from engineering apprentices to graduate trainees, everyone in the business is offered the opportunity to develop and flourish.
