Arriva London’s Stamford Hill garage the first in London to run only Hybrid buses
Arriva London has always been at the forefront of introducing environmentally friendly buses on behalf of TfL.
We were the first to introduce Hybrid buses on our routes, the first to drive New Routemasters (NRM) on route 38, and the first to have all electric buses on route 312 from Croydon to Norwood Junction.
Now, with our services running out of Stamford Hill, we believe we are the first operator in London to have a garage running only Hybrid buses, with the route 73 NRMs and the all hybrid (HV) vehicles on route 253.
The environmental benefits these vehicles bring are numerous. They have fuel savings of up to forty percent on conventional diesel buses, they are less noisy, create much less carbon dioxide, and reduce environmental impact.
Hybrid technology is constantly being further developed and the two hybrid systems Arriva London currently operates are slightly different to each other. The HV buses run what is called a parallel system, whereas the NRMs operate a series system.
The parallel system has a small diesel engine and electric motor coupled to the drive axle in parallel. A portion of drive power supplied to the axle varies from diesel engine & electric motor depending on the vehicle demand and the amount of stored chemical energy i.e the charge of the battery. The battery is charged from the engine and regenerative braking.
With the series system, the small diesel engine is only used for power generation. There is no direct mechanical link to the drive axle from the engine. Therefore it is much like a diesel electric train, the engine charges the battery, which in turn powers the motor. Therefore, like a train, there is no need for a gearbox, which gives a significant reduction on the overall weight of the vehicle.
With the electric motors being used to pull away, these vehicles increase the customer experience by providing smooth constant acceleration.
Arriva London is extremely mindful of its social responsibility for care of the environment for future generations, and believes that Hybrid’s are only the beginning of a greener electric future.

Vintage bus parade at Victoria Bus Station to mark the 70th anniversary of the first post-war RT bus features an Arriva route
To mark the 70th anniversary of the first post-war RT bus, there was a parade of vintage buses at Victoria Bus Station on Wednesday morning.
The visit had been organised following Leon meeting Enfield bus driver Malkiat Birdi, whilst he was attending the TfL initiative for drivers called Hello London.
Making the capital’s buses as simple to use as the London Underground is a new initiative being trialled on seven London bus routes, including Arriva London routes 150 and 128.
In association with TfL and HCT Transport, we opened our doors to welcome the public, giving them the opportunity to explore the garage, meet our operations teams, ride on a bus through the bus wash, tour our operations control centres and see & ride on some historic preserved buses.
Our recent route gains in North London include route 19, from Finsbury Park to Battersea Bridge (South Side), which has meant implementing an extensive mobilisation programme to maintain our high standards.
One of the most important elements in Arriva London’s development is the training and education it offers its staff, from engineering apprentices to graduate trainees, everyone in the business is offered the opportunity to develop and flourish.
