Arriva Payroll Givers meet representatives of the charities they support on #GivingTuesday
As the festive season approaches, we all look forward to the good-will of giving and receiving, and this was truly illustrated last week when members of our staff made a tour of London, on our open top bus, to meet representatives of some of the charities they give to through their Payroll Giving and celebrate #GivingTuesday.
Our first stop was the RNLI Tower lifeboat station by Waterloo Bridge. Here, we had the pleasure of meeting Katie, Nick and volunteer Jim of the RNLI, who thanked everyone for their Payroll Giving and then explained the workings of the charity and how the donations are spent.
We were enraptured by their talk, and amazed to discover that this station alone has already been out on that stretch of the Thames for more than 400 lifesaving sorties this year. Arriva London drivers Daniel, Robert and Rob explained their reasons for giving to the charity, and then Jim said how much they all appreciated these continued gifts, enabling them to have the best equipment and facilities to carry out their work.
Away from the water, we made our way to Whitechapel to meet with Robert from Centrepoint, the leading homeless charity which provides accommodation and support to over 9,000 homeless people aged 16–25 both in London and across the UK. He said:
"Payroll Giving is extremely important to us. It makes up about 10% of our corporate income, and if people weren’t kind enough to give straight out of their pay, we wouldn’t be able to provide a number of the really important services that we offer to young people, such as housing, health support, both physical and mental, as well as educational opportunities."
Our next appointment was with Jessica, who works for the Great Ormond Street Hospital children’s charity, GOSH for short. We were given a forty-minute tour of the hospital areas we could safely visit away from the wards, and were touched to learn more of the great work that goes on.
Arriva London’s Payroll Givers Andy, Errol, Lee and Paul, who all give to GOSH, were particularly interested to learn more about what their funds are used for. As Jessica explained:
"The charity has four key areas which we fund. They include re-development of the buildings, purchasing equipment that the NHS can’t provide, world leading research, and welfare services such as parent accommodation and play teams for the children.
"Arriva London are massive supporters of GOSH and we’re so grateful for everything they’ve done, not only delivering our patients and their families safely to us every day on their buses, but also for all of the Payroll Givers that give so much in their pay.”
Currently, over 1,000 of our staff give to more than 160 charities every week through Payroll Giving. At Arriva London, we offer everyone the opportunity to join the scheme, and show all staff how easy it is to join. We are currently looking to encourage more of our colleagues to give in this way, and carry on supporting these amazing causes.

Every year, Arriva London’s staff show their massive generosity through their continued charitable giving.
