Lessons on an Arriva London bus for Ilford’s Newbury Park Primary School children
There can’t be a better way of learning about how buses work, than getting on one and asking the drivers. This is precisely what happened this week, when Arriva London were invited to take one of their red single deck buses to Newbury Park Primary School in Ilford, and give four classes the opportunity of sitting on the bus with their teacher and asking numerous and varied questions.
For each of the children Arriva London had bought along a Hi-Vis safety vest with the message ‘be safe, be seen’ on the back. Everyone was asked to wear them before alighting the bus.
Helen and Sharon, the Arriva London drivers, also had some questions for the children and were interested to learn that out of the four classes, only a very few had ever been on a bus before and, of these, only a handful take a bus to school.
The children had come well prepared with their many questions, “How do you become a bus driver?”, “How does the bus move?”, “Where do buses go at night?”, “How do you steer the bus?”, “How many red buses are there in London?” and many more, for which Helen and Sharon were well prepared with their answers. The four classes were drawn from the 4-6 year age group and their excitement and enthusiasm was infectious.
By way of thanks to Sharon and Helen each class sang their version of ‘The wheels on the bus go round and round’ and then had their picture taken with them beside the bus.
Arriva London were delighted to have the opportunity to introduce these young children to what it’s like to be on a big red London bus.
As Helen said:
”It was great to see all of the children’s excited faces and to have the opportunity to answer their questions. They were all so well behaved and sang their songs with such enthusiasm. It’s really good for Arriva London to be able to visit schools in the communities they serve, and to give these young children the chance to see and feel what it’s like to ride on a bus.”
Stella, one of the teachers at Newbury Park Primary had this to say:-
“Thank you so much for today Arriva London. The children loved it and came away with facts about buses that they never knew before. They are now so excited to learn more about our topic and it's thanks to you and your team!”

We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
