London’s first all electric bus route to be operated by Arriva London
Transport for London (TfL) has announced that Arriva has been awarded the contract to operate route 312, which will become the first route in London to be operated entirely by electric buses.
Arriva London, which already operates route 312, was re-awarded the contract after a competitive tender process. The contract will run from September 2015.
There are currently two Optare MetroCity electric single deck buses on route 312, which runs between South Croydon and Norwood Junction. These two buses have been used as an initial test to establish whether the technology could stand up to the rigours of operating in an intense urban environment such as London.
Arriva is currently in talks with OptareMetro the manufacturer of the buses to add a further seven electric buses to the route. A date for the route 312’s conversion to all electric buses will be confirmed later this year.
Passengers and drivers notice that pure electric buses offer much lower noise and vibration levels compared to diesel vehicles, with the bus operating company benefiting from lower maintenance and running costs. These buses have zero tail pipe emissions, resulting in lower carbon emissions and improved air quality. The current trials will help TfL develop plans for greater use of electric buses in central London in the future, contributing to the Mayor’s vision of a central London Ultra Low Emission Zone.
Daniel Box a driver with Arriva London for the last ten years is full of enthusiasm for the new buses. He says:-
Driving an electric bus is an exciting time for the drivers on the 312, as the electric buses are the future. It’s quite a privilege to be on the first route that’s going fully electric” he also says:- “ they are very smooth and efficient and they pick up speed easily. They’re also comfy to drive and the passengers find them very comfortable as well.

Vintage bus parade at Victoria Bus Station to mark the 70th anniversary of the first post-war RT bus features an Arriva route
To mark the 70th anniversary of the first post-war RT bus, there was a parade of vintage buses at Victoria Bus Station on Wednesday morning.
The visit had been organised following Leon meeting Enfield bus driver Malkiat Birdi, whilst he was attending the TfL initiative for drivers called Hello London.
Making the capital’s buses as simple to use as the London Underground is a new initiative being trialled on seven London bus routes, including Arriva London routes 150 and 128.
In association with TfL and HCT Transport, we opened our doors to welcome the public, giving them the opportunity to explore the garage, meet our operations teams, ride on a bus through the bus wash, tour our operations control centres and see & ride on some historic preserved buses.
Our recent route gains in North London include route 19, from Finsbury Park to Battersea Bridge (South Side), which has meant implementing an extensive mobilisation programme to maintain our high standards.
One of the most important elements in Arriva London’s development is the training and education it offers its staff, from engineering apprentices to graduate trainees, everyone in the business is offered the opportunity to develop and flourish.
