Two primary schools visit two of our garages in two days
As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
With this in mind, we recently welcomed two schools to two of our garages on two consecutive days, giving them the opportunity to see how a busy bus operator manages running over 1,600 buses across London every day.
The garages were Clapton and Enfield, and they were delighted to each host a local primary school, Hoxton Garden Primary school for Clapton and George Spicer Primary school for Enfield.
The children, aged between four and six, were collected with their teachers and some parents from their respective schools in one of our double deck buses. They were then driven to their respective local garage and on entering, introduced to one of our Engineers and their bus driver, where they had the opportunity to ask questions about the buses and the bus service. The schools had requested these visits as the children were currently learning about 'people who help us' and 'how transport helps our lives'.
The buses were then driven around the garages, keeping the children safe within the bus, whilst allowing them the opportunity of seeing buses being serviced and repaired. Before driving back out to the forecourt area, the children were taken for a drive through the bus wash, with much excitement and wonder.
The children were then given the opportunity to sit in the cab and see what it’s like to be in control of a big red bus. They were then taken back in the bus to their schools and on alighting, given a small red model bus as a memento.
We know from past experience that these visits are very effective in helping pupils understand how important it is to have an efficient and helpful bus service in their local community, and we are extremely proud to be able to assist these schools with their educational process, and, maybe in years to come, some of these children will be the bus operators of the future.

In line with other Arriva London garages across London who hold travel training days for people with disabilities, Brixton garage in South London held its first Travel training day last week.
Last October, Arriva London was awarded the contract to run route 368 from Barking, Harts Lane Estate, to Wangey Road in Chadwell Heath, for five years starting from the 30th April 2016.
The M.A.D (Making a Difference) awards are an annual national event in Arriva’s calendar. The idea is to recognise members of staff that are passionate in what they do, and regularly go the extra mile to provide the best possible customer experience, whether an engineer, a member of the support staff or a driver.
Arriva London’s Dartford garage was recently the venue for a continuation of a TfL initiative, inviting disability awareness groups to Arriva London garages, for open discussions about the difficulties of travelling on London buses for people with disabilities.
A new idea to turn older diesel engine buses into much more environmentally friendly vehicles has been developed. The basic idea behind the unit, is that the old diesel unit that currently drives the wheels is removed, and a retrofit diesel/electric hybrid is fitted.
Arriva London is always happy to try and accommodate our customers’ requirements, so we were delighted to receive this thank you note from ten-year-old Jeremy, following his visit with his parents to Arriva’s Grays garage yesterday.
