40 Not Out

HIGH-TECH and sophisticated – a bit like a space shuttle, in fact – that’s how David Cartmill, senior vehicle engineer, describes the modern buses of 2008.

And he should know a thing or two about buses having just celebrated 40 years as an engineer in the bus industry.

David first joined London Transport as an apprentice in 1968 at Victoria.

After carrying out his training, David became a qualified engineer and spent 22 years at Victoria.

He later transferred to Brixton where he became a senior vehicle engineer and then four years later moved to Thornton Heath in the same role. He’s been at Thornton Heath ever since.

“It’s been a good job – it’s certainly helped to pay the mortgage – and I’d like to carry on here at least until I’m 60, which is another five years away yet!” said David.
